Back to the Future: Beauty Hacks I'd Share with My Younger Self

Updated: Aug 8

As each year passes, we often reflect on where the time has gone and what we want to achieve in the coming years and prompting us to consider what we could have done differently. When it comes to beauty, if only we could travel back in time to offer our 20-year old selves some crucial advice. From avoiding regrettable beauty trends to making smarter skincare choices, here's a list of beauty tips we wish we could share with our younger selves, brought to you by Miss Makeup and the Global Beauty Group.

1. Don’t Get That Tattoo!

Tattoos can be beautiful expressions of art, but they don’t always turn out as planned. A misspelling, a change in personal taste, or just poor quality can turn a tattoo into a regret. Although tattoo removal is effective, it can take 6-12 sessions to completely erase your ink.

So how does tattoo removal work? Laser tattoo removal machines work by gently penetrate the skin to target the tattoo pigment, breaking down the ink into fine particles that are then processed out of your body through its natural drainage (lymphatic) system. The sessions are fairly quick but can be a bit painful, so be sure to take some pain relief beforehand.

2. Embrace SPF!

We all love the idea of a sun-kissed glow, but sun exposure is one of the worst things you can do to your skin. Sun damage accounts for 80% of visible aging, breaking down collagen long before you start to tan. With the depletion of the ozone layer, especially in Australia where our sun is particularly intense. Using SPF 30+ or even 50+ is essential to protect your skin from UV damage. For those sunny days out, opt for tinted moisturizers or BB creams with built-in SPF.

3. It’s Never Too Late for Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair reduction might seem like a big commitment, but it’s no more so than paying for painful wax appointments every few weeks. Investing in 6-8 sessions of laser hair removal can save you time and discomfort in the long run, leaving your future self grateful for smoother skin with fewer razor burns and ingrown hairs. Laser hair removal machines target the hair follicle, heating it to prevent regrowth, and while the sessions are quick, the results are long-lasting.

4. Leave Those Pimples Alone!

Popping pimples can lead to scarring, and for those with chronic acne, scarring can occur even without touching the skin. If you suffer from acne scars, micro-needling (or Collagen Induction Therapy) is highly effective at resurfacing the skin and reducing scars. This treatment uses a pen with tiny needles to create micro-wounds, triggering a healing response that boosts collagen production. The new collagen smooths out wrinkles, fine lines, and acne scars, leaving your skin rejuvenated and plumper.

5. Invest in a Good Skincare Routine (and Stick to It!)

A solid skincare routine is essential for maintaining healthy skin. Start with a good cleanser, toner, and moisturizer, and consider seeking professional advice to tailor products to your skin’s specific needs. Dermatologists, dermal therapists, and aestheticians can provide valuable insights through professional skin consultations and analyses.

6. Learn to Love the Skin You’re In!

Above all, self-acceptance is the most powerful lesson. Embrace your unique shape, size, and color. Constant comparison to others is common, but learning to love your body as it is can boost your confidence and happiness. We only have one body in this lifetime, so it’s important to cherish and take care of it.

By following these pieces of advice, you can avoid some common beauty pitfalls and make choices that your future self will thank you for. Embrace these tips and celebrate the beauty of self-care and self-love!
